The Wiscasset Community Center offers a lifeguarding certification course to the community. This program provides lifeguards with skills and knowledge necessary to keep patrons in our aquatic facility safe in and around the water. After completing the required 32 hour course, lifeguard candidates will have the skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to emergencies and provide care accordingly.
PREREQUISITES: We have a pre-course screening required for all candidates entering the lifeguard training course: TEST DATE Fall 2009
• Must show proof of age (Minimum age is 15)
• Swim 400 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order:
1. 200 yards front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing propellant kick.
2. 100 yards breaststroke
3. 100 yards of either front crawl using rhythmic breathing or breaststroke. This 100 yards can be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke
There is NO time requirement for this skill!
• Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 8 feet, retrieve a ten pound brick, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the brick. Timed swim 1:40 (Note: Candidate must keep both hands on the brick and must keep his or her face above water.)
